My husband (Jimmy) and I go way back. We met in high school although I’m not sure you can call us high school sweethearts. I remember first meeting him at your typical high school house party. Everyone mingling with red solo cups in hand. Music blasting, but no one dancing. Except Jimmy. My friends and I being dancers joined him on the dance floor. I was instantly attracted to his fun demeanor, silly moves, and obvious rhythm. We finally started dating the Summer before I left to UCLA while he entered his sophomore year at UM. We successfully completed three and a half years of a long distance relationship. It wasn’t long before I knew he was the one.
We started dating at a young age. I know that. But the truth is I believe that things happen for a reason. And I believe Jimmy was put in my path for a reason. About a year into dating my father passed away and it was one of the most difficult times in my young adult life. I know I could not have gotten through it without him by my side. I love that Jimmy knew my dad and I love that I didn’t have to go through several heartbreaks before meeting someone with all the qualities I looked for in a husband. I am so grateful for our timing.
In September 2018 we took a vacation to Italy. Our last stop was Venice where we stayed at the gorgeous San Clemente Palace isolated from the hustle and bustle that is Venice. One late afternoon Jimmy pressured me to start getting ready for dinner. Being that we had three hours before dinner I took my sweet time. He kept peeking into the bathroom sighing, huffing and puffing; “do you really have to curl your hair?!”. I became so annoyed, what was the big rush? When we finally got downstairs there was the most gorgeous sunset overlooking the water that took my breath away. He explained he wanted to watch the sunset before heading to dinner. I became suspicious but was too distracted by the sunset and capturing a pic for the gram to care. Suddenly he grabbed my hand and walked me onto the dock. He smiled. I smiled. I knew. He got down on one knee, poured out his emotions and asked me to marry him. I couldn’t stop laughing/crying to notice the photographer he hired to capture the moment for us. We kept our engagement to ourselves for the rest of the night and enjoyed our first dinner as an engaged couple.
We always knew we wanted a destination wedding. We loved the idea of a full weekend of festivities. We wanted something traditional with a fun, flirty, tropical, and romantic vibe. We thought back on past vacations and locations we loved and ultimately chose Cartagena, Colombia. It had everything we were looking for and it felt very us! *Cue the reggaeton* We hired a wedding planner and got to planning! Fast forward to the end of February 2020 and our wedding week finally arrived!
